5 Steps to Declutter Your Bathroom

bathroom organization home organization

Bathroom organization is actually pretty simple.  The bathroom is most likely the first thing you see in the morning. If you are beginning your day in a cluttered mess, you’re setting the stage for a stressed-out day! The bathroom is also usually the smallest room in the house but one in which you spend a lot of time. The only items that should be stored in this room should relate to bathing, hygiene, toilette or relaxing.

Step 1

Remove everything from the countertop. Clean the countertop off really good. Then replace only necessity items such as soap, toothbrushes, facial tissues, a candle, and toothpaste. Do not let your bathroom counter be a catchall.

Tip: Push yourself to keep 95 percent of your bathroom items hidden. This will not only help your bathroom look better but it will take less time to clean!

Step 2

Find a home for everything that will no longer sit on the countertop. Try to group like things together (makeup and hair care items together; lotions, deodorants, and perfumes together; soaps, shampoos, and conditioners together; extra toilet paper and facial tissues together). If you have children, medicines should be stored securely away from items your children use.

Tip: Keep soap in a pump rather than a bar on the sink. This looks better and is less mess to clean up.

Step 3

Sort through the items under your sink, in the vanity drawers, in your medicine cabinet, on shelves, and in cupboards.

Toss:

  • All sunscreen more than two years old
  • Old, half-full tubes of toothpaste and bottles of shampoo and conditioner that you have stopped using but have not thrown away
  • Expired medications
  • Hair dryers, curling irons, straightening tools, etc., that you never use or are broken
  • Dull tweezers
  • All makeup more than a year old
  • Extra applicators and old makeup sponges
  • Leftover hotel samples you will never use
  • Towels that are ripped or worn out

Step 4

Wash out all cabinet shelves and drawers as you are sorting.  If you do not have enough storage space under your bathroom sink, buy some organizers. There are a variety of choices on the market. My favorites are the clear, stackable drawers.  Label each drawer for a specific category.

Tip: If you do not have enough shelf space, roll up your towels and washcloths and keep them in a pretty basket by the shower.

Step 5

Declutter and clean the shower and the tub.  Consider a shower caddy that hangs from your showerhead or sticks to your shower wall to hold smaller bottles of shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Do not have multiple bottles of the same products.  If you have toys in your shower or tub, store them in a mesh holder that suctions to the shower wall. The mesh holders are best because they do not hold water that can cause the toys to mildew. You can usually find these in the baby-supply section of most stores.
